AFSA Convention Moved to Summer of 2022

AFSA’s Triennial Convention that was scheduled for this summer in Puerto Rico has been postponed because of COVID-19. The convention will be rescheduled for the summer of 2022.

The AFL-CIO also has postponed its Constitutional Convention by one year; it now will be held in Philadelphia by the end of June 2022.

A resolution passed by the AFSA General Executive Board stated:

WHEREAS, the AFSA Constitution states that a convention be held every third year during the month of July or August, and 

WHEREAS, travel restrictions and risks caused by the COVID pandemic have made meeting together for AFSA’s Triennial Convention in the Summer of 2021 impractical and unwise, and  

WHEREAS, important items of business for the convention, including the election of Officers and General Vice Presidents, and the debate and adoption of resolutions of educational and labor policy and action plans for furthering these resolutions remain, and 

WHEREAS, this business is better conducted in person, allowing for the free exchange among delegates, and 

WHEREAS, pursuant to the AFSA Constitution, the General Executive Board has general supervision over all affairs of AFSA between conventions and the power to decide all questions involving the interpretation of the Constitution, 

THEREFORE, IT IS RESOLVED BY the general executive board THAT, the Convention scheduled to be held in the Summer of 2021 is postponed and to be held in person in July or August, 2022, and

IT IS FURTHER RESOLVED THAT, the dates and timelines for selection of delegates, submission of constitutional amendments, resolutions and nomination of Officers and General Vice Presidents is extended to 2022 to comply with the AFSA Constitution and Rules, and  

IT IS FURTHER RESOLVED THAT, the terms of the current Officers and General Vice Presidents are hereby extended until the election is completed at the Summer, 2022 Convention, and 

IT IS FURTHER RESOLVED THAT, a convention call to all local unions and state councils shall be made on or before March 1, 2022 setting forth the number of delegates and procedures for selection and requesting suggestions and recommendations for the convention, and

IT IS FURTHER RESOLVED THAT, nominations for the positions of President, Executive Vice President, Secretary/Treasurer and General Vice Presidents may be submitted on or before March 31, 2022, and nominations received after that date will not be accepted, and 

IT IS FURTHER RESOLVED THAT, proposed amendments to the AFSA convention may be submitted until 90 days prior to the convention start date, but proposed amendments submitted after that date, except for those submitted by the GEB, will not be accepted for consideration at the convention, and 

IT IS FURTHER RESOLVED THAT, resolutions for consideration may be submitted until 60 days prior to the convention start date but resolutions submitted after that date, except for those submitted by the GEB, will not be accepted for consideration at the convention.
